Williamsville tops the school rankings again

Three and counting. The Williamsville Central School District once again holds first place in Business First's annual rankings of Western New York's public school systems.

"I take unbelievable pride in the work that everyone has done to make Williamsville No. 1," says Howard Smith, the district's superintendent of schools.

"We not only have good students, teachers and administrators and a strong board of education, but we also have a very supportive community," he says. "We have everybody on board, helping to move this district forward."

Business First graded 97 districts in the eight-county region, using three years of test data compiled by the New York State Education Department. Each district's score reflects the collective performance of its public high schools, middle schools and elementary schools.

Williamsville holds first place because of its broad record of academic excellence:
Ninety-six percent of its graduates received Regents diplomas last June, making Williamsville one of 14 districts above 95 percent. Students must pass Regents exams in English, math, science and social studies to earn a Regents diploma.

It outperformed all other districts on last year's Regents math A test. It also ranked among the six best districts on Regents exams in U.S. history and science.

Williamsville was one of the top 10 districts on four key tests below the high school level. Its most impressive showing was first place on the standardized math exam for eighth graders.
Business First pegged Williamsville's score at 100 points, then calculated the ratings for all other districts off that benchmark. Rounding out this year's top five are Clarence
